Prison Genius is a storytelling and documentation project dedicated to preserving first-person accounts of incarceration and its lasting impact on individuals, families, and communities.
Many experiences within the criminal justice system are discussed without the voices of those who lived them. Prison Genius exists to create space for those voices to be shared directly, thoughtfully, and on the contributor’s own terms.
This project is not about interpretation or persuasion.
It is about listening.
Our Purpose
We believe personal stories have value as records of lived experience and as contributions to the public understanding of incarceration.
By collecting firsthand narratives, Prison Genius is building a carefully maintained archive that encourages reflection and understanding without reducing people to labels, outcomes, or statistics. Stories are preserved as human accounts, with care, context, and respect.
Ethical Commitments
Because many submissions involve vulnerable or sensitive experiences, ethics are foundational to our work.
- Voluntary participation
All contributions are submitted willingly. Contributors choose what to share, how much to share, and whether to remain anonymous. - Respect for the contributor
Stories are presented in the author’s own voice. Editing is limited to clarity, safety, and consent—never interpretation or sensationalism. - Privacy and safety
Identifying details may be limited or removed at the contributor’s request. Prison Genius does not seek or publish confidential legal information. - Reflection over judgment
This project does not exist to excuse harm or assign blame. We believe accountability and reflection can coexist within honest storytelling.
What This Project Is — and Is Not
